Refugee Research & Innovation Network (RRIN) – Impact Report ( 2025)

Over the past year, the Refugee Research & Innovation Network (RRIN) has continued to champion the voices, skills, and experiences of refugees, forcibly displaced people, and host communities across the UK and internationally. Through research, innovation, and collaboration, RRIN has worked to ensure that the lived experiences of refugees are at the centre of policy, practice, and community-led solutions.

Amplifying Voices through Research

At the heart of RRIN’s work is the commitment to elevate refugee perspectives in decision-making. In 2025, RRIN collaborated with over 120 refugees and asylum seekers in the UK, co-designing participatory research projects that explored barriers to education, mental health support, and employment. For example, a project in Manchester focused on young refugee women navigating access to higher education. Through interviews and creative storytelling workshops, participants shared their struggles with language barriers, financial pressures, and cultural expectations. These narratives were compiled into policy briefs that have since been shared with local councils and university departments, influencing the design of more inclusive support programmes.

Driving Innovation and Practical Solutions

RRIN has a strong focus on translating research into innovative solutions that directly benefit communities. In London, the network piloted a mobile app connecting refugees with local services, legal advice, and mental health resources. One participant, Ahmed, a refugee from Somalia, reflected: “Before the app, I didn’t know where to find help for my children’s schooling or my own health. Now, I feel supported and part of the community.” This project has since expanded to three boroughs, with over 500 users accessing vital services.

Collaborative Partnerships

The impact of RRIN is amplified through partnerships with universities, NGOs, and community organisations. In Birmingham, RRIN partnered with a local arts organisation to run storytelling and performance workshops with refugee families. The resulting theatre production, performed at a local community centre, highlighted the resilience, hopes, and daily challenges of displaced families. Attendees described the performance as “eye-opening” and “deeply moving,” with local policymakers noting the insights it provided into community needs. These collaborations ensure that research and innovation do not exist in isolation but are grounded in real community experience and delivered collaboratively.

Humanising the Numbers

While the statistics are impressive—over 1,200 refugees engaged, 15 research projects completed, and 8 innovative community initiatives launched—the real impact lies in the stories and lives transformed. For instance, Fatima, a Syrian refugee mother, participated in a digital literacy programme co-designed by RRIN. “I never imagined I could help my children with schoolwork or apply for jobs online,” she said. “Now, I feel confident and hopeful.” Stories like Fatima’s underscore the importance of RRIN’s approach: research, innovation, and community engagement working hand-in-hand to produce meaningful, human-centred impact.

Influencing Policy and Practice

RRIN’s evidence-based research continues to shape local and national policy. Recent briefs have informed discussions on refugee access to healthcare, education, and mental health support. In partnership with academic institutions, RRIN has hosted roundtable discussions and workshops with policymakers, ensuring that refugee perspectives are integrated into decision-making processes. This approach fosters not only practical solutions but also long-term systemic change.

Looking Ahead

As RRIN moves forward, the network remains committed to scaling its initiatives, amplifying refugee voices, and fostering innovation. Future plans include expanding digital access to resources, supporting refugee-led entrepreneurship, and deepening collaborations with local authorities and community organisations across the UK.

Conclusion

The Refugee Research & Innovation Network demonstrates that research and innovation are most effective when they are inclusive, participatory, and human-centred. By combining evidence, creativity, and lived experience, RRIN continues to empower refugees, influence policy, and foster communities where displaced people are not only supported but celebrated for their resilience, skills, and contributions.
